About the Kekoldi Scientific Centre

Kčköldi Scientific Center

From researchers and student groups to the average tourist, people are discovering the awesome array of opportunities to explore tropical ecology and participate in conservation programs of global importance at the Scientific Center. The lodge, or "albergue", has turned into the Kéköldi Scientific Center and is a base camp for avian ecology research and countless other potential ecological studies. The vision that this community has maintained for sustainable community development is realizing itself with this Center.  International as well as local collaborations and alliances are key to the success of this amazing initative.  Asociación Wak Ka Koneke invites people from all over the world to visit and enjoy. You won't find fancy laboratories, but nature at it's finest in a rustic community lodge setting.

LODGING AT THE SCIENTIFIC CENTER

If you will be in the area and would like to spend the night at the Scientific Center, we would love to have you.   We offer dorm style rooms with 2 bunk beds in each room and shared bathrooms.  We also offer basic meals.  Please bring bottled water if you do not wish to drink the spring water at the Center.  We also recommend fine meshed mosquito nets, long sleeves for night time, and good hiking boots or rubber boots.

Life Zones and forest coverage

The Kéköldi Indigenous Reserve is located within the Tropical Humid Forest Life Zone (THF). Approximately 20 – 30% of the Reserve has characteristics of primary forest. Other areas look heavily forested with some canopy trees. Most of these areas have cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao) in the understory. Within the reserve there are also some open agricultural areas for growing basic grains. These areas regenerate to “tacotales” and secondary forest of different stages.
